Annual Insurance Review: What to Check Every Year

Your life changes every year. Your insurance should keep up. Here's a practical checklist for reviewing your coverage before your renewals hit.

Most people set up insurance once and then forget about it until the renewal invoice arrives. That's understandable — but it means coverage quietly drifts out of alignment with your actual life. An annual review catches the gaps before a claim exposes them.

Life Changes That Require Coverage Updates

Certain events should trigger an immediate call to your agent — not a wait until the next renewal. Major life changes include marriage or divorce, having or adopting a child, buying a home or investment property, starting or closing a business, adding a teen driver, or receiving a significant inheritance. Each of these events changes your risk profile and often your coverage needs significantly.

Home Insurance Checklist

  • Has your dwelling limit kept pace with construction cost increases in the Chicago suburbs?
  • Have you made any home improvements — kitchen remodel, addition, finished basement — that increase replacement value?
  • Do you have any new high-value personal property (jewelry, art, electronics) that should be scheduled?
  • Have you updated your home inventory in the past 12 months?
  • Do you have a pool, trampoline, or new dog that affects your liability exposure?
  • Are you running a home-based business that requires additional coverage?

Auto Insurance Checklist

  • Have your drivers changed — new teen driver, driver removed from household?
  • Have you added or replaced vehicles?
  • Is your mileage significantly different from what the policy reflects?
  • Are any vehicles financed or leased — and do lender requirements still match your coverage?
  • Are your liability limits high enough given your current asset level?

Life Insurance Checklist

Life insurance needs grow and then contract over a lifetime. A young parent with a mortgage and young children has a different need than a 60-year-old with a paid-off home and grown children. Review your coverage amount against your current income replacement needs, outstanding debts, and dependent care obligations. Also verify that your beneficiary designations are current — outdated beneficiaries on life insurance are a surprisingly common and costly oversight.

Beneficiary designations on life insurance and retirement accounts supersede your will. An ex-spouse named as beneficiary before a divorce will typically still receive those assets. Review and update beneficiaries after every major life change.

Umbrella and Liability Review

If your net worth has grown, your umbrella coverage should keep pace. Review your umbrella limit annually relative to your total assets. Also confirm that your underlying auto and home liability limits meet your umbrella carrier's requirements — a gap in underlying limits can create unexpected coverage problems.

Business Insurance Checklist

  • Has your payroll increased significantly — affecting workers' comp premiums?
  • Have you added locations, vehicles, or equipment?
  • Have you taken on new types of work or clients that require different coverage?
  • Has your revenue grown to the point where your business income limit needs adjustment?
  • Do you have any new contractual insurance requirements from customers or landlords?
